Polls

Ask a question and show live results

Ask a question, watch results come in live, and close it to lock the result in and announce it — with more control under the hood than a typical reaction poll.

Turning it on or off

Every server chooses for itself — switch Polls on or off from your dashboard, under Engagement. When it's off: no new polls can be created.

Setting it up

  1. 1

    Create with `/poll create`

Choose your question, options, vote style, and whether it's anonymous or allows multiple choices.

  2. 2

Set an end time if you want it to close itself

Otherwise close it manually with /poll close whenever you're ready to lock in the result.

  3. 3

Use hidden results for anything vote-order-sensitive

A visible running tally can turn a poll into a bandwagon; hide it if that matters for this particular question.

Two voting styles

Reaction-style polls use numbered emoji reactions under the message — familiar and instantly readable. Button-style polls use interactive buttons instead, which is what unlocks anonymous voting and weighted votes, since Hez can track who clicked without it being visible as a public reaction.

Weighted votes and hidden results

Button-style polls can assign extra vote weight to specific roles — a boosters' vote counting double, for instance — configured once at creation and frozen for that poll. Results can also stay hidden until the poll closes, useful for anything where seeing the running tally would bias later votes.

Commands

Tips & things people get wrong

  • Weighted voting only applies to button-style polls — reaction polls always count one vote per reaction, since Discord's reactions don't carry that kind of metadata.
  • Anonymous mode only works with buttons for the same reason: a reaction is visible on the message itself, so there's no way to make a reaction anonymous.
